Any time is a good time for fishing
That seems to be the motto for most avid fishermen. As soon as they get a break from work and hone duties, they are off fishing somewhere. For most avid fishermen, the season does not matter. Ice fishing, regular fishing, trolling, and other styles, bring a bit of joy to the avid fisherman’s life. But what about ice fishing on Simonton Lake? It is a small lake comprised of two basins and a channel. Is the ice fishing good there? It seems that is if you know where to fish and what tricks to use to help you get a bite or two. Keep in mind that weather and other factors will play a role in if the ice gets thick enough to ice fish. Here are some tips to help you make ice fishing on Simonton Lake good. Where to fish Like real estate, the location of your ice fishing hole will make the difference. If you cut the ice in the wrong spot, then you may not have a good time out on the lake. Some experienced ice fishermen say to stay to the north side of the channel on the west side of the lake. The lake is supposed to drop 6 to 8 feet in depth and there should be plenty of fish in that area. They may be there but they may not be biting when you are there. Timing your fishing In the Spring and Summer months, it is possible to go out nice and early to catch your limit. But in the Wintertime, the fish seem to sleep in a bit and retire early. The best time to fish on Simonton Lake would be between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. which seems to be the time when the fish are the most active. Tune up your fishing gear Winter weather and temperatures can be hard on all of your fishing gear. Before you head out, make sure all your fishing gear is ready for the cold weather and water. If you are not sure how to do this, there are plenty of ice fishing pros that can help you. Use the right bait While you can use lures in the Spring and Summer, the fish are not as quick in the winter and you may be wasting your time using a lure through the ice. The best bait to use in ice fishing is live bait. Like the fish, the live bait will move slower and be more attractive to the fish as well as easier to catch. Yes, ice fishing is very good on Simonton Lake if you know how to do it right. Watch your location, prepare your gear, and make sure to use live bait. There is no guarantee that you will catch anything but chances are you will. This is a great lake to ice fish in. The key is to make sure the ice is thick enough before you step out onto it.

Not all homeowners Associations are alike
In the case of the Simonton Lake Homeowners Association, you may be hard-pressed to find a more unique and dedicated organization when it comes to homes and neighborhoods. The Association's purpose is to maintain property values, which is similar to all HOAs. However, they also strive to protect the wildlife in the area, the surrounding environment as well as support local law enforcement. It is important to keep all visitors and residents safe. To do all of this the Association has created 4 committees to oversee all of these duties. The Committees There are 4 committees established by this Homeowner’s Association to help spread the responsibilities around as well as to ensure smooth operation. These committees are: #1. Communication- publishes the Simonton Says newsletter as well as maintains the Association website and Facebook page. #2. Safety- maintains the navigational buoys in the lake as well as helps replace them. Then they send out Lake Alerts to warn residents of any crime in the neighborhood #3. Environmental- this is exactly as it sounds. It is a committee that works hard to preserve the local environment. #4. Membership- sends out gift bags to new residents, oversees the annual membership drive as well as hosts a variety of events, and so on. It seems that this Association is well-managed and very organized. They also seem to cover all the bases so that nothing in the neighborhood is not looked after. What is unique about this HOA Besides protecting the environment and supporting local law enforcement, this Association has gone non-profit. It is an interesting move and it has held this status since May of 2019. According to their revenue and expense reports, the association has had its share of ups and downs with the major revenue windfall taking place in 2017 and the most expensive paid out in 2019. There are still $140,000 in assets with no liabilities held against it in their last reports. It does seem that the association does manage its affairs very well Simonton Lake Homeowners Association support There are three ways to support this Association. One is to make sure you pay your dues on time or in a timely manner. The second is to volunteer your services. You can do this either by joining a committee or participating in any of the events the Association holds or sponsors. The third way is to make a donation to The Simonton Lake Preservation Trust and these donations are tax deductible. Overview of the HOA Overall, this Homeowners Association seems to be well managed and they have their priorities straight. Their effort to protect the environment and its residents should be praised Their membership fees seem to be reasonable not charging more than $30 per year for those people under 70 years of age and only $20 for those in their seventies. 80 and above are considered honorary members. It may be worth checking out to see if you fit with the current members of this Association. Elkhart is more than just RVs
Simonton Lake Sportsmen's Club is located in the heart of the RV industry but it has little to do with this recreational manufacturing. Instead, it is owned and operated by a non-profit group that is responsible with restocking Simonton Lake with fish. It is a sportsman club that works with a variety of charities and it is always looking for new members. The purpose behind this club is very altruistic and generous towards the Olso food pantry. It is one of those clubs where just about anyone who is interested in helping others can join. It does not seem to be reserved for the rich or a restrictive club. Membership Fee To maintain its responsibilities, the club does charge a minimal membership fee. The fee at this time is relatively inexpensive at $25 and you send it in after someone from the club contacts you. To let them know you are interested in joining, you have to fill out a simple form on their About page and wait to be contacted. Once you join, you can keep track of the events sponsored by the club on their website under the navigational link labeled events. Or you can read their newsletter using the same navigational bar. The drawback is the newsletter does not seem to be published that often with the latest one dated February 2019 Activities at the club There are a wide variety of activities that should interest just about everyone in your family. The Club sponsors some kid’s fishing competitions as well as golf tournaments for older members of the family. Other events have included a casino night, turkey shoot, fireworks, poker nights, and much more. There seems to be a Christmas party held in December. Once you are a member you should be able to find activities and events that interest you. One special event is the night they hold a fall ball that includes collecting money and food items for the local food bank. The drawback to the club The purpose behind the club is very admirable. Plus, the membership fee is affordable. However, these two things do not overcome the problem of old news. The website needs updating and the content needs to be more current. Unless this information changes after you become a member, the lack of current information may not impress people and cause them not to join. The activities are varied but some people may not like the idea of casino nights or poker playoffs. The location of the club The Simonton Lake Sportsman Club is easy to find and it is located just beyond the eastern shore of the lake as well as on the eastern side of County Road 11. When you visit, you can always take a day trip to Michigan as the Club is not far from the Indiana/Michigan border. State Line Road to the north and County Road 4 to the south are your main access roads. This is a club worth considering to join. |
