Thinking About Visiting Simonton Lake?
Elkhart might be the RV Capital of the World. However, interested individuals have more than one way to experience it and its surroundings. One excellent example would be vacation rentals, which offer more comfort and privacy than other accommodations. If you are interested in one of ours situated around Simonton Lake, you would do well to learn more about the area so you can plan your stay with confidence.

How Big Is Simonton Lake?
Simonton Lake measures 302 acres. Historically speaking, an acre is supposed to be the amount of land that someone can plow using a team of eight oxen in a single day, which made sense because it comes from an Old English word meaning "open field." However, it has long been established that an acre is equal to 43,560 square feet. For context, a football field is 57,600 feet, meaning it is almost one and one-third acres. Similarly, the median lot size for a home fell from 10,000 square feet in 1992 to 8,177 square feet in 2019, meaning an acre can fit five such lots with a bit of room to spare. Given this, it should be clear that Simonton Lake is quite sizable.
That said, you should know it is important that Simonton Lake measures more than 300 acres. Anything that clears that hurdle is considered an all-sport lake, meaning it will allow you to do waterborne activities that can generate wakes. Those are too fast and too disruptive in smaller bodies of water where wakes can erode the shorelines and stir up the bottom sediments. Something that can kill wildlife, pollute the waters, and cause other problems. Fortunately, Simonton Lake measures more than 300 acres, meaning it is an all-sport lake.

What Else Should You Know About Simonton Lake?
Here are some other things you should know about Simonton Lake:
  • Simonton Lake consists of a channel connecting not one but two basins. One is called Big Simonton Lake, while the other is called Little Simonton Lake. There are several human-made channels on the eastern end, which is why they have such a grid-like appearance on the map.
  • Most of the homes situated on the lake are occupied year-round. Only 10 percent are a mix of summer homes and vacation rentals. Thanks to that, you can visit the area without needing to fear that you will be drowned out by a sea of like-minded visitors.
  • This is similar to how the lake is big but not too big. An area of 302 acres means you can engage in a much wider range of waterborne activities than otherwise possible. However, the lake is still much smaller than its counterparts measuring in the hundreds of thousands or even millions of acres. If you are in the right mood, this can make it the perfect size for your vacation getaway.
